Scientists of the Petersburg Institute for Emergency Medicine Research have proposed an unusual new method for treating severely affected "Covid-19” patients.
The institute's experts base their proposal on the results of a Chinese study, that it is possible to treat "Covid-19" as a poisoning that causes an increase in the level of free iron in the blood.
Scientists from Sichuan University of China had discovered that the emerging coronavirus removes divalent iron atoms from hemoglobin, which leads to damage to many organs and tissues, clots and blood vessel damage.
According to experts, this process is similar to hemolytic poisoning, which damages red blood cells, which transport oxygen.
"If this hypothesis is confirmed, the possibilities of treating people with the emerging coronavirus will be expanded by using means of cleansing the body from free iron," said Sergey Netisov, a correspondent member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
