Discover the mechanism of acne

Biologists have discovered that people with acne have decreased GATA6 expression. So they assume that their discovery will help innovate new ways to treat acne.

Nature Communications reports that acne is a widespread skin disease, and about 650 million people worldwide suffer from it. Acne occurs when hair follicles become clogged with dead skin cells and sebum.

Biologists from seven countries led by Fiona Watt of the Royal College of London studied the cell lines involved in the balance of the upper part of the hair in their modeling of human adipose bacilli. By taking samples from the skin of five healthy people and nine patients suffering from a different level of acne, they discovered, that the patients' GATA6 protein is very low.

The researchers demonstrated that the GATA6 protein controls a number of physiological processes, including the proliferation and differentiation of keratinocytes (epidermal cells in hair follicles) and that the retinoic acid (tretinoin) used in treating acne stimulates the emergence of GATA6 expression.

Researchers have obtained experimental evidence confirming that, via the signaling pathway, GATA6 prevents the formation of pimples that clog the pores of hair follicles and greatly reduces the condition of patients suffering from acne.
