Scientists in Thailand have developed a sock polish that kills bacteria and treats stinky feet.
The coating, made from zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs), can prevent foot odor and keratolysis, a bacterial infection.
Scientists say that the anti-bacterial properties of ZnO-NPs, which are harmless to human skin, make the coating suitable for incorporation into textiles, including socks.
The coated socks were successfully tested on students by researchers at Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University in Thailand.
Researchers tracked the wearing of coated socks on 148 students at the Thai Naval Assessment School, where they saw foot odor and keratolysis as a common complaint among military personnel.
The study showed that those who wore ZnO-NP coated socks had significantly less foot odors.
This was compared to the group of unpainted socks, who experienced a more intense foot odor with a greater negative impact on their daily lives, '' the experts said.
These socks could provide a new primary preventive option for both military personnel and those exposed to these embarrassing conditions.
