Facebook pays millions of dollars for contents

Facebook launched the UK's "News" tab in January in a move that is expected to pay the company millions of dollars a year to publishers to license their articles, the Guardia reports.

In a blog post announcing the launch, Facebook said it also aims to help publishers expand their audience, which could help increase subscriber numbers and ad revenue.

For publishers, the most important aspect of the service is likely to be payments that Facebook says it pays to include content.

Facebook declined to say how much it expected to pay as part of the scheme, but the Guardian reported that some publishers expect to make millions of dollars a year from the service, at a cost that generally amounts to tens of millions of dollars for Facebook.

Facebook says it has partnered with more than a dozen publishers, including Guardian Media Group, Economist, Daily Mirror, Daily Express, Wired, Liverpool Echo and Manchester Evening News.

Similar to how it works in the United States, the "News" tab includes a mix of coordinated and personal stories.

News summaries of key stories are provided, readers are directed towards original and reliable reports, and the service also recommends new topics and articles based on what people choose to read and share.

Sarah Brown, Head of News Partnerships at Facebook In Northern Europe, said Facebook's news providers are concerned with the quality of reports and the source of individual news articles when choosing which articles to highlight.

The "News" tab was officially launched in the United States earlier this year, and the company says that 95 percent of the visits that publishers gained through the service were from new audiences.

The company said in August that it was considering expanding the service to more countries, including the UK, Germany, France, India and Brazil over the coming year.

Facebook made it clear in its announcement today that it is in active negotiations to launch the service in France and Germany, without mentioning Brazil or India.

In addition to launching the News tab in the UK, Facebook says it is expanding its community news project, which has funded the training of 80 journalists over the past two years.

The program was extended for one year at a cost of $3 million, which could provide an additional year of training for more than half of the programme's current journalists, as well as dozens of new correspondents.
