Amazon buys used commercial aircraft for the first time

Amazon announced that it has purchased second-hand commercial Boeing 767-300 commercial aircraft from Delta and WestJet, the first for the e-commerce giant.

The company has steadily built its air freight capacity over the years through lease agreements, but this is the first time Amazon has owned its own aircraft.

The deal comes at a time when aircraft prices have fallen due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Airlines are accelerating to cut their fleets as passenger demand declines amid worldwide closure demands.

Purchases include seven Delta used commercial aircraft and four used commercial aircraft from WestJet, which will join Amazon by 2022, the company says.

"Our goal is to continue to provide services to customers across the United States the way they expect from Amazon, and buying planes is the next natural step toward that goal," said Sarah Rhoads, Vice President of Amazon Global Air.

"A combination of leased and owned aircraft in our growing fleet allows us to better manage our operations, which in turn helps us keep up with our customers' promises.

Amazon launched its air fleet in 2016, assuming that by 2022 it will have more than 85 chartered and owned aircraft.

According to a year-old analysis, Amazon delivers more than half of its packages in the United States, where it is accelerating its push to acquire the entire logistics chain and end its relationship with companies such as FedEx and UPS.

The newly purchased aircraft aim to help speed up delivery of parcels purchased through Amazon, which has seen record demand as a result of the epidemic.

The company says it continues to rely on offshore carriers to operate these new aircraft.

Amazon has quickly become a major player in the transportation world, and Amazon is set to play a major role in the way people and things around the world move as one of the major delivery and logistics companies in history.

Some of the company's most recent deals indicate that it has ambitions beyond just delivering parcels.

Amazon recently acquired emerging self-driving car company Zoox, which unveiled its prototype self-driving car.

The company has also participated in multiple funding rounds for the rivian electric car company, which designs a battery-powered truck for the e-commerce giant's deliveries.

She contributed to a $530 million funding round for emerging car and self-driving truck company Aurora.
