Apple store achieved $64 billion in sales in 2020

The Apple App Store made more than $64 billion in 2020, a 28 percent increase from the estimated $50 billion in 2019, according to an analysis by CNBC.

This figure represents a good measure of growth for Apple, given that the estimated increase between 2018 and 2019 was only 3.1 percent when it made $48.5 billion in 2018.

The rise indicates that Apple Store sales growth accelerated strongly during the Coronavirus pandemic, with people taking refuge at home, spending more time and spending more money on apps and games.

Apple's main growth area is the company's score growth, and its revenue is being talked about as part of revenue from apple services, which announced sales of $53.7 billion in fiscal year 2020, which ended in September.

The money Apple makes from its app store has become a highlight for Apple critics who argue it has too much power.

Apple charges 30 percent of digital sales through its platform, with a few exceptions, and the company has recently changed its fee structure, and now requires 15 percent of companies generating less than $1 million in the app store.

A congressional subcommittee found in 2020 that Apple had a monopoly on the power to distribute iPhone applications, which it said was giving the company huge profits.

Apple has been sued over antitrust grounds by Epic Games, which wants to avoid paying 30 percent of its iPhone gaming sales to Apple, which it describes as unfair.

Apple does not disclose the amount of revenue the App Store generates per year, and instead, since 2013, it has released data points in January that include the total amount Apple has paid developers since the app store began in 2008.

Using these numbers, it's possible to guess how much revenue the App Store generated is approximately based on how much Apple paid developers in any given year.

According to a recent press release, Apple has paid developers $200 billion since 2008, $45 billion more than the figure announced in January 2020, and if that's 70 percent of App Store sales, the Apple Store made about $64 billion last year.

There are some exceptions to Apple's 30 percent ratio, and Apple's figures are rough, which means that total App Store sales are likely to be higher, and app analysis firm Sensor Tower estimates that the App Store has made $72.3 billion in 2020 sales.

1 percent of the top app publishers generate 93 percent of revenue via the App Store, according to a 2019 estimate from Sensor Tower.
