Facebook and Instagram ban Trump for 24 hours

Facebook said it had banned President Trump from posting on the site for 24 hours, and the decision came after the company removed publications it posted in support of groups supporting him who attacked the U.S. Capital.

"We have assessed policy violations against President Trump's page, resulting in a 24-hour ban on all features, and that it loses the ability to publish across the platform during that time," the statement said.

Adam Mosseri, president of Instagram, confirmed that Trump's Facebook-owned Instagram account will also be closed for 24 hours.

Earlier in the day, Facebook removed a video posted hours after the attack began, with Trump calling on protesters to go home and falsely stating that an election had been stolen from us.

The company also removed a text post asking its supporters to remember the day forever.

The move comes after Twitter suspended Trump's account for 12 hours after removing three tweets that the company said represented serious violations of its policies and threatened a permanent ban.

"We removed the video because we believe it contributes to rather than reducing the risks of ongoing violence," said Guy Rosen, the company's vice president of integrity.

But preventing Trump from posting on his page for a whole day is another escalation of the Facebook platform, whose officials have spent most of Trump's presidency trying to avoid applying its rules to him.

In an earlier statement, Facebook officials said they were appalled by the violence at the Capital and were treating these events as an emergency.

The company said it is looking for and removing a wide range of publications, including content praising the groups that attacked the Capitol, calls for protests that would break the capital's curfew, and attempts to respond violently in the coming days.

Facebook said it intends to amend the labels it used to apply to election-related publications, and the new message says: Joe Biden has been named president with the results ratified from all 50 states.

"The United States has existing laws, procedures and institutions to ensure a peaceful transition of power after elections."

The company also announced new restrictions on certain activities in its group feature, including automatic deactivation of comments via posts that encourage hate speech or violence.
