Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter, said Wednesday that the company is considering allowing its users to receive tips or digital payments from followers.
Dorsey said the feature helps the social media platform earn more money and share from its 192 million daily users.
"I think the first thing we want to focus on is the economic incentive for people who contribute to Twitter," he said at the Goldman Sachs Virtual Technology and Internet Conference.
Offering tips to the user and new features, such as content subscriptions, will help the company diversify its revenue, which it currently earns mainly from selling ads via Twitter.
The company said Tuesday during a earnings call with analysts that it does not expect subscriptions to be beneficial to the company's revenue until next year.
Last month, Twitter bought emerging news anchor Revue, which hopes to attract users who want to create long-term content.
Dorsey also said he envisions SMS becoming less centralized over time, a development that gives social media users more control over their data and the type of content they see.
"We want to stay at the forefront as the market moves and where people are moving, and I very much think that this trend will be achieved.
In the 40-minute interview, Dorsey talked about a variety of topics, including organizing and Twitter's plans to explore revenue outside advertising.
Twitter is looking for new ways to generate revenue outside of ads, including ideas, such as charging subscription fees for services such as TweetDeck, a control panel for tweeting scheduling and multi-account management.
Bloomberg reported On Monday that Twitter is also considering charging for exclusive content or ad-free feeds.
Dorsey spoke about the different ways Twitter is looking to give users more control over their experience across the site.
Twitter users may be able to choose different algorithms, which social networks use to choose what content users see, in order to organize their experiences.
External developers can also create their own algorithms for people to choose.
