Licorice is a drug or a delicious food


Many medicines based on licorice are sold and it is even used in some types of desserts. So is licorice a medicine or a delicious food?

The doctor notes that licorice is a perennial herbal plant, which has been used since ancient times for therapeutic purposes. This means that licorice-based candy and lollipops may be somewhat beneficial for health as well.

"These sweets are made from licorice, which is used in folk medicine to treat cold diseases, and it has an expectorant effect," she says. "In modern pharmaceutical sciences, it is one of the components of liquid drugs and expectorant tablets. Licorice is effective against infections as well." Laxatives and diuretics, and it is also used as an antacid. According to the doctor, licorice can be used as an alternative to sugar. 

  She says, "It is recommended for diabetics, who should eat less sweets. It is also used in medicinal nutrition and medicines to block the bitter taste of the basic therapeutic substance in it, and makes its  taste acceptable.

  The doctor points out that licorice-containing sweets cannot be considered medicinal materials, and says, "The concentration of licorice in candy, lollipops and chewing gum is low, so they cannot be considered drugs and depend on them in treatment. Rather, they can be considered a delicious and sweet-tasting food substance, like the rest of the sweets that contain them.”

 Dr. Koshibina warns, against consuming too much licorice, it may have unwanted side effects.
