The first mass prayer will be held on Wednesday to open the Algiers Mosque, the third largest mosque in the world and the largest in Africa, on the occasion of the celebration of the Prophet’s birthday, a year and a half after the completion of its construction.
The inauguration is supposed to take place under the supervision of President Abdel Majid Tebboune.
On Wednesday evening, the prayer hall of the mosque will be opened, which can receive 120,000 worshipers.
The Mosque of Algeria extends over an area of 27.75 hectares, and is thus the third in the world in terms of area after the Prophet's Mosque in Medina and the Grand Mosque in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
As for its minaret, which can be seen from all over the capital, it is the highest in the world, at 267 meters or 43 floors, and can be accessed by elevators that provide panoramic views of the Algerian capital.
The interior of the mosque was decorated with Andalusian character, with six kilometers of calligraphy panels on marble, alabaster and wood. As for the carpets, they are blue-turquoise with floral motifs, according to a traditional Algerian character.
