America lost to China in Artificial Intelligence patents race

China is now leading the world in ausi patent applications, surpassing the United States for the first time, a development seen as strengthening the country's position, which has become the second largest in the AI market amid Beijing's technical and commercial war with Washington.

Li Yoshio, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Cybercrime Studies, highlighted the achievement at a press conference Monday at the 7th WIC World Congress.

Last year, China filed more than 110,000 applications for AI patent rights, surpassing the United States in the number of such applications worldwide, according to Li, whose agency follows the Chinese CyberSpace Administration, the industry's regulator.

"China is strengthening its independence and technical capabilities in the field of internet it," said Lee, who did not specify how many AI patents the United States had filed in 2019.

The sharp rise in AI patent applications in China, finance, and commercialization of surveillance activities prompted the U.S. government to take action in October last year, when a number of Chinese tech pioneers were added to Washington's commercial blacklist. This has restricted their access to high-tech U.S. components, such as semiconductors and software.

China, which has planned to become a global AI leader by 2030, is also facing challenges due to unclear technology application scenarios, high investment, and security and ethical issues.

China and the United States see promising technical potential in helping to improve the efficiency of their respective economies, including industries such as manufacturing, transportation, logistics, health care and education.

Last year, the surveillance market was china's single single end user of artificial intelligence, accounting for 53.8 percent of all applications operating with the technology, according to research firm iiMedia. The finance sector came in second with 15.8 percent, followed by marketing with 11.6 percent, and transportation at 4.2 percent.
