Japan creates cockroaches robots to help humans with complex tasks

The Japanese University of "Tsukuba" team provided cockroaches with electronic chips that control their movement on walls and floors, to carry out a set of complex tasks.

According to the British newspaper, scientists have installed electrodes in the bodies of robots called "Calmbots", in addition to an antenna, a battery and a pixel to be used as a display.

Researchers say that cyborg cockroaches can move objects around the house, draw on paper, and may someday act as an audio or haptic input device.

The tiny robots are part of the Digital Nature Group project, a department at the University of Tsukuba, that aims to unfold their creativity at home.

Experts at the University of North Carolina, USA, confirm that cyborg cockroaches can be used to survey areas and send them to disaster areas to search for people trapped under the rubble and perform reconnaissance missions.

The cockroach was specifically selected for its mobility, self-care and hiding abilities, the cockroaches were modified with computer components through implants, and the team tested its ability to control cockroaches through walls, carpets and floors with cables.
