Causes of developing gaps between teeth

Regular teeth are often the most prominent aspects of healthy teeth, and once there is a gap or void between them, this may mean a problem that needs to be treated.

Dr. Martina Hodgson, principal dentist at The Dental Studio, says there can be "many reasons" for the appearance of dental vacuums, explaining: "The causes include gum disease, soft tissue factors, age and orthodontic relapse."

1- Periodontal(Gum) disease:

"When plaque is allowed to accumulate around teeth full of bacteria, your body has an inflammatory response," Martina says. This can lead to bleeding, swelling of the gums and loss of bone support around the teeth.

If not treated, this may lead to "drifting" of teeth and tooth spacing. Worse still your teeth can become loose or may fall out.

 2-Soft tissue factors:

The location of your lips and tongue in relation to your teeth can lead to spacing, as they act as a constant force on the teeth, which can lead to what is known as tooth movement.

 3-Age:

"As we get older, our teeth tend to rush forward." But sometimes the opposite can happen, especially if you have removed teeth in the mouth.

 4-Orthodontic relapse:

If you have braces to fill gaps in your teeth, they can appear again if you're not wearing retainers.

Dr. Kailesh Solanke, dental consultant at DentalPhobia, adds that the spaces between your teeth can appear due to "lack of oral hygiene, including smoking."

With the closure of the Corona pandemic reducing visits to dental clinics, this time has become particularly risky with regard to dental health and vacuum development. So, if you notice new spaces between your teeth, the first thing to do is make an appointment with your dentist, who can find out what's going on in your mouth and recommend right treatment.
