Harmony OS reaches all Huawei phones soon

Huawei moving away from the Non-GMS Android system to its Harmony OS 2.0 operating system.

Huawei has officially launched the first developer supremo of Harmony OS 2.0 for mobile devices, with the release next year of smartphones based on its operating system.

Yang Haisong, Vice President, Consumer Business Software, Huawei, said: "To date, more than 100,000 developers have participated in harmony OS development, and the number of device partners has increased from 5 to 10.

Industry reports claim that given the current progress, next year all Huawei devices will acquire Harmony OS, meaning consumers do not need to buy new devices to try the system.

Wang Chenglu, head of consumer software at Huawei, said the goal is to cover more than 100 million devices from more than 40 major brands by next year.

Harmony OS is technically just a change in the bottom layer of the previous EMUI user interface.

According to huawei's official website, users of the Harmony OS trial can return to the hard version of the EMUI 11 user interface through HMA.

Smartphones that can currently have the developers' trial version of Harmony OS 2.0 include:

  • Huawei P40.
  • Huawei P40 Pro.
  • Huawei Mate 30.
  • Huawei Mate 30 5G.
  • Huawei Mate 30 Pro.
  • Huawei Mate 30 Pro 5G.
  • Huawei MatePad Pro.
  • Huawei MatePad Pro 5G.
  • Huawei MatePad Pro Wi-Fi.

Harmony OS is very similar to the Android-based EMUI 11 user interface, and developer documents indicate that the apps are written in Java, and that the layouts are specific in XML files, similar to Android.

Huawei clearly hopes to make its new operating system as familiar to Android app developers as possible, in order to reduce obstacles in the transition to the new operating system and the associated ecosystem.

Early users also stated that Android's development ideas could be applied to harmony OS development, which greatly accelerates the development of the system.

Huawei says Harmony OS 2.0 comes with over 15,000 application programming interfaces to support development across smartphones, wearables, cars, big screens, and many other use situations.

The company officially unveiled its operating system for the first time in a year and a half, introducing the Honor Vision Smart TV as its first operating system.

Throughout 2019, the company confirmed its commitment to Android, with plans to expand its system to include devices other than smartphones and tablets.
