Snap acquires "StreetCred" location services company

Snap acquired the emerging location data collection company StreetCred, headquartered in New York City.

According to Techcrunch, the owner of the Snapchat app will retain four of the company's crew, including founders Randy Meech and Diana Shkolnikov, who will work on the app map and other company products associated with the site.

Through the acquisition, the company aims to improve Snap's map, which allows users to view public snapshots from specific areas and share location among friends, and the company's investment in this corner is evident through its strategy to expand the scope of the map's services.

Last summer, the platform added a search bar dedicated to exploring the app map that had the greatest impact on increasing user interaction, with the company announcing that the new addition was used by 200 million people per month.

The company also supported its platform with many other additions related to the site data, including "Local Lenses", which enables developers to create and drop filters and lenses enhanced geographically on the environment in which the user is present.

The experience of StreetCred's founders is expected to reflect positively on snap's app and map bringing with it a host of new features, with Meech serving as ceo of Samsung's mapzen open source mapping platform, while Shkolnikov took over as the platform's engineering director in the same period.
