Vuzix announces microLED smart glasses

Vuzix wearable technology and augmented reality technology has announced microLED smart glasses, thanks to a partnership with China's Jade Bird Display.

MicroLED screens have emerged in recent years as viable alternatives to OLED screens, leading to progress mostly in television.

The technology allows the installation of very small but powerful projectors on both sides of smart glasses, which, according to Vuzix, look very close to something you might feel comfortable with in public on a daily basis.

Combined with Vuzix waveguide technology and its display engine optics to display the image across the interior of the glass, the result is a tool that can display a monochrome or color image on both lenses with a variety of pixel density and clarity.

Vuzix says the device supports the optional wireless and LTE network as well as stereo speakers and noise cancellation microphones.

There are also gesture-based touch controls supported by Android and iOS, presumably to control accompanying mobile applications using only smart glasses aspects.

Unlike the previous $1,000 Blade model from Vuzix, this new version has no official product name or price yet, but Vuzix says it should be on the market this summer.

The shift towards workplace-focused augmented reality and virtual reality products has accelerated through the slow adoption of consumer-oriented glasses, as well as the general lack of major advances in basic technology in this area.

The lukewarm consumer reception of augmented reality and virtual reality products has not prevented some big names from experimenting with consumer smart glasses, as Amazon entered the smart eyewear market through Echo Frames.

Facebook is also working on its first glasses in partnership with Ray-Ban, and rumors continue to spread about Apple's plans to launch enhanced reality glasses or smart glasses sometime in the near future.
