Like Apple's Tile and AirTags, the device can be connected to keys, a bag, or anything else you want to track.
Galaxy SmartTag uses Bluetooth to communicate with Samsung's nearby device, and the company has confirmed that a UWB-powered version called Galaxy SmartTag Plus is supposed to arrive later this year.
The UWB broadband version allows for better competition with Apple's AirTags, which are also expected to take advantage of the latest UWB capabilities in the iPhone.
The tracking device is sold in two different colors and works with any Galaxy device as long as the device runs Android 10 or the latest version.
Device owners can then locate the missing item using the attached tracking device via the SmartThings Find app.
This works similarly to Tile devices and low-power Bluetooth tracking devices, since when the tracking device is offline — that is not connected to the Galaxy S21 or any other device — it sends a low-power Bluetooth signal that can be detected by nearby Galaxy devices.
When discovered, the device sends nearby location information to the SmartThings Fine app so you can locate the item.
Samsung says that user data in the SmartThings Find app is securely encrypted and protected, so your location and personal information are secure when you lose your device and use the app to search for it.
The app also offers a variety of location tools, including the Notify me when it's found option, as well as Search Nearby and Ring tools.
Like Tile, you can also use the device to locate the missing phone, in which case you press the Galaxy SmartTag button twice to receive an alert to help locate the missing phone.
The tag can also be customized to do other things when you press it once, so you can easily turn on the lights or TV when you get home.
